Interested in volunteering at a community garden?
If you’re interested in learning more about urban agriculture, volunteering in a community garden is a great place to start. Our volunteer workdays bring together individuals and groups at community gardens around metro Atlanta, helping gardens accomplish tasks on their to-do lists and allowing volunteers to explore these unique and productive spaces. The work we undertake varies depending on gardeners’ request and the season, but our most common tasks include weeding, turning compost, spreading mulch and beautifying garden spaces. No experience needed – you’ll learn as you work!

How Does It Work?
REGISTRATION
Food Well Alliance organizes garden workdays 2-3 times a week. When you register for a workday, you’ll also be signed up to receive our monthly volunteer newsletter, highlighting upcoming opportunities.
Garden workdays are open to 15 volunteers. Individual volunteers can register directly through the volunteer link above. Volunteers interested in coming out as a group should read the information in the next section on how to sign up for a volunteer day.
GROUP VOLUNTEERS
Corporate Volunteer Groups: Looking to plan a personalized experience for your company team? We can work with you to create a custom corporate service project especially for your group. For corporate group projects, we request a donation to offset our costs and support our programs. While there is no set amount, suggested donations range from $1,000 for 20+ person corporate groups to $2,500 and up for corporate groups of 50+. Your contribution supports planning and materials for your project, with any additional funds going towards resourcing of community gardens and urban farms. Interested corporate groups should email DahRah Prince at dahrah@foodwellalliance.org.
Other Volunteer Groups: Community gardens are great places for school, civic, faith and other organizations to volunteer as groups. We try our best to accommodate all group requests while maintaining our focus on supporting community gardens. While we’d love to pair you with a garden in your area, there can be extenuating circumstances. The closest garden may not need assistance at the time you request to volunteer or be too small for the group, and we occasionally receive urgent requests for assistance that require us to work elsewhere in our service area. We try to coordinate work days that are considerate of everyone involved. We appreciate your flexibility and are excited to have you volunteer with us! Interested groups should fill out the Group Inquiry Form. One of our staff members will follow up with you shortly.
YOUTH VOLUNTEERS
Our minimum age to volunteer is 8 and all participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at the garden. For youth groups, there must be at least one adult for every 8 youth participants. All volunteers under 18 will need a signed Youth Waiver to participate. You can download a copy of the youth waiver here.
LOCATION
After you register for a community garden workday, you’ll receive an email one week before the workday with more details about the location. Remaining flexible allows us to respond to gardens’ needs as they arise and gives volunteers timely work to accomplish.
Our service area includes Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Gwinnett, and Cobb counties. Your volunteer workday could be in any of these areas. Many of the community gardens we regularly serve are within about 20 miles of downtown Atlanta.
For group registrations, we are more flexible on coordinating a location. Please submit the Group Inquiry Form to start this process.
DAY OF
Wear sturdy, close-toed shoes, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, and a hat is optional to make you more comfortable. We also recommend you bring a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray.
Food Well Alliance will provide tools, gloves, snacks, and instruction for workday tasks.
Please arrive on time for the scheduled workday. Every volunteer day begins with an orientation to go over the day’s tasks. If you arrive after the orientation, please check in with our volunteer coordinator upon arrival.
Masks are now optional during volunteer workdays unless requested by the gardeners we assist.
