At its annual Love Local event, Food Well Alliance released Atlanta's first Local Food Baseline Report, a snapshot of the social, economic, ecological and nutritional impact of the city's current local food system.

The baseline report provides a snapshot of the history of Metro Atlanta's food movement, as well as what it looks like today. The report focuses on four core areas where local food benefits the community: economic development, community vitality, health and nutrition, and environmental stewardship. Examples of successes and leadership are included in the report, demonstrating the strength of diversity, creativity, ingenuity and collaboration.

"Food builds community and is vital to creating the prosperous Metro Atlanta where we all want to live," said Food Well Alliance Chairman Bill Bolling. "Our city's local food movement supports farmers and community gardeners, unites neighborhoods and increases access to healthy food for all. This baseline report is a call for our community to collaborate on ways to strengthen Metro Atlanta's local food system."

A $2 million grant from the James M. Cox Foundation was also announced at the event.

"Food Well Alliance is growing Atlanta's local food movement, and this grant will help continue its important work," said Alex Taylor, chief operating officer of Cox Enterprises and Food Well Alliance board member. "From collecting food data to supporting organizations dedicated to growing and sharing healthy food, the alliance helps address inequity and empowers individuals and communities.  The grant will enable powerful, positive change for our city."
