Atlanta’s local food movement is ripe full of expert knowledge on how to build healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy communities. Soil Festival 2018 is the perfect opportunity for these leaders to share their expertise with more Atlanta locals.

Our workshop educators are delighted to provide you with their unique perspectives on successful gardening and composting practices. Whether you’re an urban farmer, a community gardener or a backyard gardener taking your first steps into composting and gardening, we’ve got workshops for you. Read below to find the ones that are calling your name!

Composting Basics with Natasha Dyer
1:15 - 2:00 PM at Workshop Station A

Have you been curious about how to start composting at your urban farm, community garden, or in your backyard? Then this is the workshop for you! In Composting Basics, Natasha Dyer will be teaching participants the basic essentials of composting. Come learn about the alchemy of making compost, best practices, and tips/tricks on building a great pile. Natasha is senior recycling program coordinator for the City of Atlanta, Mayor’s Office of Resilience. In her role, she brings the City closer to a solution for diverting large scale organic waste for the purpose of turning it into useful compost.   

Compost Myths with Corinne Coe
3:00 - 3:45 PM at Workshop Station A

In the Composting Myths workshop, Corinne Coe will address and dispel common myths around composting. Corinne (aka Atlanta’s Compost Queen) is co-founder of Terra Nova Compost and co-chair of the Social Justice Sub-committee of the National Cultivating Community Composting Coalition. Corinne has been teaching composting since 2008 and has led composting projects across the U.S. and in Haiti, Puerto Rico, Uganda, Egypt, and Sierra Leone.

Community-based Composting with Prentiss “Farmer P” and Jasann “Lovey” Gilliam

Once you know the basics of composting, you’ll be ready to learn about the practical side of opening your urban farm or community garden to community-based composting. In Community-based Composting, Farmer P and Lovey Gilliam will share how they have engaged and encouraged the community to compost at their urban farm and the lessons that they’ve learned along the way. Lovey and Farmer P are owners and farmers at Gilliam’s Urban Farm.

Soil Recipe: What Makes Healthy Soil? with Tony Gobert
1:15 - 2:00 PM at Workshop Station B

Have you ever wondered how to make your soil healthy? Have you been looking for a recipe to make healthy soil? Then join Tony at the Soil Recipe: What Makes Healthy Soil? workshop to discover how to make your soil healthy. Tony Gobert is a farmer and a Small Farmer Production instructor at Gwinnett Technical College in the Sustainable Urban Agriculture Program.

Don’t forget to bring samples of your soil to get tested! You can get your soil tested for lead at the soilSHOP booth and the basic nutrition of your soil tested at the Ask the Expert booth.

Advanced Composting with Khari Diop

Do you already know the basics of composting but are looking to step up your composting game? Are you currently composting at your urban farm or community garden and would like to take it to the next level? Then the Advanced Composting workshop with Khari Diop is the workshop for you! Khari will delve deeper into composting best practices for the more advanced composter. Khari is founder and CEO of Think Green, Inc. and community grower extraordinaire.

Cover Cropping with Joe Reynolds
4:00 - 4:45 PM at Workshop Station B

Interested in learning how to keep your soil healthy and fertile? Join Joe Reynolds for our Cover Cropping workshop to learn how to grow cover crops in all sized spaces to improve the health and fertility of your soil. Joe is a food activist, community organizer and farmer at Love is Love Farm at Gaia Gardens. He and his wife Judith started Love is Love Farm to demonstrate that young, land-less farmers can build a successful farming operation and actively serve the good food movement through mindful land stewardship.

Harvest Hour & Cooking Demo with Terri Carter
Harvest Hour: 1:30 - 2:30 PM at Center Gazebo
Cooking Demo: 3:00 - 3:45 PM

Truly Living Well staff will show participants how to pick fresh produce from the farm beds. Then Terri Carter will provide a cooking demonstration using the food picked from the Truly Living Well beds. Terri Carter works in the Family and Consumer Science Department at the University of Georgia Cobb County Extension. She is an avid organic gardener and works on a program called The Food History of the South, which traces the foods that we call Southern, soul, country, and comfort foods back to their roots.

Cooking Demo: 4:00 - 4:45 PM

Truly Living Well staff will show participants how to pick fresh produce from the farm beds. Then Christi Hansen from Hungry Heart Farm will provide a cooking demonstration using the food picked from the Truly Living Well beds. In addition to being co-owner of Hungry Heart Farm, Christi is a clinical dietitian at Piedmont Henry Hospital and is developing a specialization in dietary management for GI disorders. Her work as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist aims to bridge clinical outcomes and culinary know-how through food-based dietary interventions.

Farm Tours with Truly Living Well
2:30 PM and 4:00 PM at Center Gazebo

Truly Living Well staff will provide two farm tours where they will walk participants around the farm and tell them about the operations that take place at Truly Living Well. Each farm tour is limited to 25 participants. You can sign up for the farm tours at the registration table.
