The Atlanta Braves partnered with Food Well Alliance for their “Pitch In For The Planet” volunteer project at Tapestry donation garden.

An Atlanta-based nonprofit is working to change that by installing hundreds of community gardens throughout the metro and on Friday, volunteers with the Atlanta Braves pitched in to help.

For GA Gives on Giving Tuesday, Food Well Alliance planted an orchard at the East Point Historical Society! A group of amazing volunteers planted 25 fruit trees and bushes, including blackberries, blueberries, muscadines, a pawpaw tree, and pear trees! Once this orchard matures, the trees and bushes will provide fresh fruit for the community.

On Giving Tuesday, the Atlanta area has many opportunities for you to volunteer your time and causes to donate money to. “We provide resources and support to local growers to connect and build healthier communities,” said Kate Conner, the executive director of Food Well Alliance.

The Atlanta Braves are Pitching in for the Planet by creating 20 community orchards across metro Atlanta in partnership with One Tree Planted, Players for the Planet, Food Well Alliance, and The Giving Grove.

Some metro area nonprofits have figured out a way to get fresh fruit to people who can’t afford it — they’re growing it. Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen spent time with some volunteers this week along Hi Hope Lane in Lawrenceville, where they were planting all kinds of berries in a brand-new orchard to help a community in need.
